The GURPS Magic PDF (hereafter referred to as just Magic) is $10 cheaper than the hardcopy. It was very easy to download and featured no watermarks or DRM code, which was a huge relief; I have given up on many sites that use DRM simply because it makes even personal, legal use of the file incredibly difficult. 11 examples of combat in PDF format, using the GURPS 4th Edition rules. GURPS stands for Generic Universal Role Playing System published by Steve Jackson games originally in 1986, reaching its fourth edition in 2004. It is a table-top role-playing system, much like Dungeons and Dragons or D20 Modern, except that the basis of the system is that instead of the games being in a setting specific, I.E. medieval times, or in space, GURPS is designed to fit into any possible imaginary setting.

In addition, it is by far, the most entertaining name for a role-playing system ever.

Characters Creation

Of course, a table-top role-playing game can’t be played without characters for the players to control. Trust me, saying 'GURPS! Oh, excuse me!' will eventually get boring. Might as well put those rules books to use.

Obviously there are character sheets that you can fill out with the appropriate randomly generated numbers and such. If you’re into keeping all your records on your laptop, or maybe just not interested in rolling dice, perhaps you should consider a GURPS 4th Edition Character Generator.

For the frugal, there are several free online resources you can use, including this GURPS 4th edition character generator. It’s a web-based form that can be filled in, and when done, a character sheet can be generated and printed. The downside to a free solution like this is that there are no guarantees that the creator is going to continue it through subsequent editions or expansions, or even continue to offer it.

Just like with anything else, you get what you pay for, and sometimes a good thing for free looks better than it turns out to be. Disclosure: I like, play, and GM GURPS, but I think the 4th edition is presented like crap and its publisher doesn't see, or care about, its problems. As a result it's harder to find new players, and soon it won't exist at all outside of insane theoretical discussions on the SJG forums about statting the Large Hadron Collider as a player character.
The recent discussions about realism/narrative/best players EVAH made me think about the problems with GURPS and why people don't seem to like it. Then I remembered I have a website that I forget about most of the time, and wrote this thing while falling asleep this morning, so it's too long and meanders a lot. TLDR:
Then I proposed that people who actually know and like GURPS could fix this, partially, by posting new-player-accessible content, making up for the things that SJG has apparently forgotten. Little things like pick-your-own-adventure type solo things that teach people how the game works. If you remember 'All in a Night's Work' from 3rd edition, it filled this purpose, but it's gone from 4th edition because SJG is no longer concerned with new players. Or lists of staple fantasy critters that people can drop into their games and run with, without buying the Dungeon Fantasy set. Or party adventures that only require the Basic set, or even GURPS Lite.
